What is Roller Derby?

It’s a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction (counter-clockwise) around a track. Game play consists of a series of short match ups (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. In layman terms, it’s kind of like British Bulldog on skates, but more fun!

Why Mean City?

We’re an all gender team, which means anyone over the age of 18 years can join. We’re a recreational team and play for the love of the sport. We work hard, but we also play hard too! We’re more of a family than a sports team.

I’m not 100% sure this is for me…

There is a place in this awesome sport for everyone. Not only do we require skaters, but we also require referees and NSO’s (non-skating officials). Being a contact sport, it’s health and safety conscious and needs a number of support staff to make the game possible.

But, I’m too [insert objection here]…

Whatever it is, no you’re not! Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today, or on the 23rd May 2017… ;) Practice is every Tuesday night, until you’re proficient and then there’s a Sunday morning session too.

You’ll arrive 7pm sharp at ARC Health & Fitness, Glasgow Caledonian University, Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow, G4 0BA. We’ll get all the formalities out of the way and you can change into your derby kit. Skating starts at 7.15pm. We can then start with the basics, like how to stop and fall safely. No experience is necessary, so don’t worry if you can’t skate.

This event is for over 18's only and booking via Facebook or by email at [email protected] is essential.
