HOPE’S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS ARE BORN
Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are. (Augustine of Hippo)
Just two years after their highly-praised debut record Selivke (Migratory Birds), Slovenian singer/songwriting duo Katarina Juvančič & Dejan Lapanja have released a stunning new album: Hope’s Beautiful Daughters (Stray Cat Tunes, 2014). The 9 tracks focus on stories about women and were recorded in collaboration with 13 musicians and storytellers from Slovenia and Scotland.
This Slovenian-Scottish collaboration – the first of its kind – has been initiated by Katarina Juvan & Dejan Lapanja. The pair teamed up with the prominent Scottish musicians and songwriters Karine Polwart, Paul Tasker (Doghouse Roses), Fiona Cuthill (Raintown, Rallion), Seylan Baxter (Tattie Jam) as well as some of the country's finest storytellers (Lawrence Tulloch from Shetland, Tom Muir from Orkney and David Campbell from Edinburgh) to release the album's ambitious content. Regular Slovenian collaborators Matija Kre (fiddle), Klemen Krajc (bass), Gašper Peršl (drums), and the Salamandra Salamandra band also feature, cementing a true cultural exchange.
The music, with a basis in both folk and rock, is built on stories of women set to imaginative, rich and enthralling musical landscapes where fiddles meet roaring guitars, a Highland lass plays the ngoni and where thematically Rosa Luxemburg rubs shoulders with an Inuit woman. Emotionally intense, dramatic singing and extraordinary musicianship combined with the empowering nature of storytelling makes Hope's Beautiful Daughters a unique listening experience.
Katarina & Dejan will be launching the album with their Scottish friends in Scotland this September – in Orkney (Stromness Town Hall – 3/9/14), Edinburgh (Scottish Storytelling Center – 13/9/14), Glasgow (Old Hairdresser’s – 14/9/14) and in Berlin on the 22nd of October (Gruener Salon, as a duo).
