KP and the Boom Boom
KP and the Boom Boom is reinventing soul for a new generation. Led by dynamic, UK-born front woman Kate Priestley (KP), the Austin-based band creates a highly innovative and instantly seductive future-soul sound, with hallmarks of R&B, funk, jazz, and hip-hop. KP and the Boom Boom's high-energy live performances are infectiously danceable and inspire even the stodgiest crowds to shake their moneymakers. The band is performing at SXSW 2016 as an official showcasing artist and will release their debut album "The Brave" this summer.
KP began her musical journey in India after a mysterious stranger glanced at her and asked if she was a singer. Despite the strangeness of the encounter, she humored him and improvised while he played tabla. After their impromptu jam session, he offered her music lessons in exchange for only one thing: “Just remember my name when you’re famous.”
Since that encounter, KP has never looked back. After traveling extensively around South America, picking up the guitar along the way, experiencing more chance meetings, and participating in a serendipitous open mic night in Guatemala, she eventually landed in Austin. There she joined forces with a group of talented music geeks whose diverse influences — combined with KP’s soulful vocals, eclectic style, and magnetic personality — form an aesthetic that is sophisticated, edgy, and impassioned.
The band made major waves in 2013, releasing a four-track EP produced by AJ Vallejo and debuting a music video for their single, “Feel It.” After being heralded as a Band to Watch at UTOPIAfest 2014 by Austin Fusion Magazine and The Horn, Austin City Limits Festival selected KP and the Boom Boom for an Official ACL Late Night Show in 2015. Shortly thereafter, they were chosen to support Snoop Dogg at ACL Live Moody Theater. They continue to stir up a buzz with a multitude of energetic performances leading up to their highly anticipated debut full-length album, to be released in early 2016.
"The Austin bred band that is infectiously danceable is worth more than a glance. An ULTRA tight band with superbly smooth vocals that fuses a healthy dose of soul and funk with latin rhythms and hints of 60's jazz in horn solos." ~ Austin Fusion Magazine
"Additionally, the nature of UTOPiAfest tends to be a draw for the biggest and brightest in the local scene, which this year includes KP and The Boom Boom, Brownout (playing back up the Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA), The Wheeler Brothers, and Aaron Behrens of Ghostland Observatory..." James Roberts - The Horn
“Towards the end of the set lead singer Kate joked that it was time “To fluff up my afro so we can get down” and get down is what they did. The band finished off with some funky disco inspired music that captivated even the most stagnant souls in the room.” Luke Murphree – Listen Hear
“Get out there and see them at some point when you’re feeling like dancing the night away. You won’t regret it.” Ovrld.com
“…that night KP and the Boom Boom's mix of funky beats and soul had a packed crowd on its feet — dancing and feeling good.” Culturemap Austin
